Peter: Well, my dad was at Brooklynite so we were Mets and Jets. This again becomes a platform of an NBA brand extension that just explodes with engagement. I'm like, "I don't know. Youve collected all this human capital, both starting and back up. Peter Feigin: And then I think, the bigger picture is we really have to accelerate becoming the world's team. Its rotating cast includes bankers, lawyers and high-powered television executives. John: Just for a fun look, for our listeners sake. Peter: But one of the incredible things, alignment we have with myself, John Horst, whos our GM and coach Bud is like, weve got this undercurrent of constant improvement and kind of like never, pleased but never satisfied. You really need to build equity and build trust especially in the Midwest youve. Number one, obviously, because like you said, its rare air, but youre learning on the job. Peter Feigin didn't go looking for his job as president of the Milwaukee Bucks. I encourage it, and selfishly, its a fun way to network and deal with people. Peter Feigin: They made it really simple. We had this, I think it was an intern, said to us like, Well, we should, have you read about ghost kitchens? Of course were sitting there going like, eh, kind of like, we dont know what the hell youre talking about. How big a deal it is to renovate downtown, and how big we can become and what a billboard the Milwaukee Bucks should be for Wisconsin around the world. But the honesty of saying you dont know all the answers and figuring out what the solutions are is probably like pretty powerful in the way things work. I always think it comes back. I have an identical twin brother who's the headmaster of a school in New York City, that all of Wes Edens' and Marc Lasry's kids went to, who were two owners of the Bucks. Talk about having arguably the greatest player in the world on your team. The Paul's, who acted in several other films including Double Trouble (1992), and The Road Raiders (1989), quickly became well known in the bodybuilding community for their great strength and power, as well as their rebellious barbarian attitude. I volunteered/got myself pushed into the reset committee of the bubble committee on the NBA to do something that's never been done before. They're like, "Peter, don't double think anything. And he has represented at the highest level. You talked about the head of human capital, and obviously Im proud to say, and Im only saying this with love, youre a native New Yorker like I am and were people, people. But that kind of thing. Alex Woodhouse, 34, a photographer and musician who was a three-year starter at Colgate, joined the game in his mid-20s at the urging of a friend. Just what you said is like were always coming in this balance of how do we, we want Giannis to represent the Bucks brand. Youve done it all. Feigin's first task was evident right away. And Giannis knows whether we're talking about a big deal, whether we're talking about marketing, he knows those socks like he's good with, he owns me for a month now, he owns me. Now, he's the chair of the 2017 Greater Milwaukee Heart & Stroke Walk/5K Run, which is Sunday at Veterans Park . Brought on by Owner Marc Lasry as a sales and marketing guru, Feigin has helped the Bucks go from the basement. Peter Feigin has been the President of the Milwaukee Bucks since October 2014. And then I think on a parallel track, youre really building an infrastructure. This is why you go to Parents' Night, folks. "We have a. I dont know if thats a word, but I would attach myself. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think I moved, I graduated from college and had a job, had an opportunity for a job that was kind of nuts. I just wanted to get it done and kind of move the needle and kind of. John: Now, you married, what, wife is a native New Yorker? Because I talked with the Lakers guys, I talked with the Boston guys on what they had, did. And Dan Feigin still has keys to Trevors gym, which he has been putting to use by himself. So, it's a little bit kind of nuts and delusional to go through thinking like you can kind of accomplish or solve or get anything done, but it's kind of the way I've kind of attacked life in a big way. Youve got Jamie Dimon, who is this incredible long-term equity holder who is done it and then youve got Mike Fascitelli whos really was the chairman and CEO of Vornado Real Estate in New York on the commercial real estate side. I guarantee you'll find motivation and guidance from this remarkable man. We don't have a business, not sure when we will have a business. Talk about the steps leading up to pulling off, living the dream, actually winning the championship. But Feigin also gives credit to video games. Then, I would literally leech myself. Michael Red: Wow. The arena is Feigin's baby, and he's almost ready to show it off, as doors will open next season. Citation. Peter: The ice cream truck. In business it takes a real challenging of like where your growth is going to come from I in a big way. Peter: We have two kids. Go to the Cluckery. John: You grew up on the Upper East Side, you are a native New Yorker, your brothers still back there. Right now, its very hard to figure out and understand where its going, because this is the wild West. That automatically and having him sign for the next five years, that gives you this springboard that we think. Can you keep a competitive championship-caliber team across an era? If youre not playing defense, theyre going to call you out, said Woodhouse, who would temper his Friday night activities in anticipation of The Run. I don't know, being able to be a business person and kind of get away from your day job and go into a data room of a pro team seemed just the greatest thing I'd ever experienced. "Now we have to monitor and figure out and organize the groups that travel from Greece to away games and organize the meet-and-greets after the game, which by the way, aren't scheduled. I can come up with a solution, we can figure it out somehow, some way if youve got the right people around you to do it. Peter Feigin: Not as much as you'd like to see. John: In terms of watching the young generation now come up, has NIL and the advent of NIL do you believe thats going to have a positive or negative effect as you continue to recruit players in the future? I also listen, I thought, and my parents thought both my brother and I were as you can imagine before ADD was actually diagnosed, Peter: for kids our age and stuff, because its still be on impulsive, relentless, like, [inaudible]. Youre going to have a lot of fun. "I have a 14-year-old boy who can basically tell me every single player in the NBA, as well as G-League, what Europeans are playing all through NBA 2K," Feigin says. Michael Red: If you had to go back to your 16-year-old self, what advice would you give your 16-year-old self? So that that's been kind of part of my learning is like, "How do we create a system that we're in a much better place six months from now and a much better place 12 months and a much better place three years from now that we've shown change in metrics and results and everything like that. John: Talking about teaching, we have 15 years of this podcast, so we have thousands of young people around the world that actually tune in and listen and when we have someone like you on, Id like to ask you this. By the way, its so much fun. What people never tell you about the rings, its not just the 20 rings for the players and the coach and the owners. We stopped operating. You're exactly right. He wants to know what the answers are. Talk about the journey to the Bucks and how did that happen and then why Milwaukee? So, you take away every form of a 20- to 30-year-old's life outside of basketball, you take away their family in a big way and by the way, then you isolate them, in basically like a stay at home kind of mode in the middle of a pandemic and really like social justice, kind of uprising while they're locked into a bubble. The arena was, if the arena didnt happen, nothing happens, and that was a public-private. (There are perks to being commissioner.) Peter: Well, I think its leadership 101, youve got to grasp where you are number one, and this was a very distressed brand company position. "I did kind of the 'Dick Cheney.' Youre unbelievably inspirational. It was kind of like take a weekend and moonlight into a fun job. Does he play defense?. We were literally refining, cared about all the cookies and stories in it and stuff. "Why would we wait till tomorrow when we can get it done today?" Talk about that balance between what you do with Milwaukee and obviously, with your family, right? Their experience is basketball. If you're going to go look at teams, grab my brother. It keeps on changing, but we've got to be able to pivot and understand when we're out of balance. You can always have a kitchen with food in it. So, we see this great opportunity to lead by example and then to almost market and promote it as this should be more the norm than not the norm in a big way. It was July. Peter Feigin: So I think we have that balance. Just my own exposure was mixed in what are best practices for centralized services. And 24 hours later, I think I called them from the Pfister Hotel and said like, "Oh, yeah. Peter: You are doing your employees, your service, your limited partners so it is a huge process. I said, "Man, make sure you represent." Theyre going to look at that ring forever and remember that. We dont compete against each other in arena revenue and local media revenue. It has just been introduced for iPhones, but we are working on the Android version! It's definitely not brain surgery. always network, and in my chance, it really happened with my identical twin brother who was running a private school in New York, which all of Marc Lasry's and Wes Edens's kids went to. You buy the Bucks, you help with that whole negotiation and you were living in New York, so you were married already and you decided. He simplified the housing market for me. Now just, we've talked about your background. Feigin was a four-year member of the men's soccer team as a midfielder during his undergraduate career at Franklin & Marshall. Whether it was in sports or somewhere else Id probably look to lead an opportunity for a turnaround or a startup. And that's what we try to do. Peter Feigin: They're like, "Peter, don't double think anything. We are brand marketing sales people. But Im getting close to being that guy.. Were going to constantly improve. I think that's something that you work with every day. I know youve said your pops passed. But boy, if I could have mastered that a little bit earlier that that'd be one of the things I would do. Feigin can do all the PR he wants, but the most effective pitch to get fans into the new arena is out of his hands. How do we change the model, and really put new metrics out there, for us to get it? Peter: Hes was in consumer products. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's part of the culture and kind of down from ownership, like you're going to stand for something or you're going to stand for nothing. The one thing that's been impressive for me, being a part of the family, is seeing how you all embrace the city. I wanted to eat some. Woodhouse had no idea what to expect. Michael Red: That's exciting, man. John: Hey, Peter. By the way, I've got access to the Team President, the GM, everybody is all around just to resource and help. We were in this really awesome mode of, oh, this is a startup, like this is a startup. We've made it intimate with a 17,500-person crowd. Peter Feigin: Yeah. These guys are human beings. I think if you took me at this point in my life and where I am and. Now, youre talking to your wife and your children and youre moving from New York City to Wisconsin. His talents, hard work and dedication are the driving force behind the transformational vision for not only the Milwaukee Bucks and Fiserv Forum, but for the city of Milwaukee and state of Wisconsin. He perpetuates a culture that attracts like-minded people to him. Talk about it, you transition now from the Knicks and your consulting gig to the president of the Bucks. I got to talk about the journey to the Bucks though. Peter Feigin: It was, I don't know a better way to say it other than, grassroots. And I believe in my heart that the Bucks were real leaders in that moment. My favorite part of coming to Milwaukee is going into your stash of gear and getting the hoodies and the gear. How exhausting was the bubble? I have an identical twin brother who happens to still be in New York and runs a private school called Trevor Day School. And you know what their experience is? "We didn't have much time," he says. You got into really like, "How do we create resources for people to just talk about how they're feeling, about how they vent, about how do they get support for their lives?" But there are also long-range shooters who work in retail sales and small forwards who direct nonprofits, photographers and writers, students and teachers. I can't even imagine what these guys are going through.". And I obviously was kind of like I call myself the Division 3 dream. People can find it at, I saw the website, it was Cluckery, cluckery.com, right? So, how do you navigate the ship through waters you've never been through before? We're going to develop some residential and we'll hopefully have a great commercial tenant and we continue to build. Its hundreds of rings. This is probably the best hour of the week. Our owners, when you talk about, our active operating board of governors, youve got guys like Mark Lazari who kind of in avenue capital and ran the distressed debt world. Michael Red: One thing that impresses me about our organization is how diverse it is. Peter Feigin: I think building the relationship with Mark, probably through looking at other purchase opportunities and kind of talking through it. More recently, Tom Kearns, a mental health counselor and one of The Runs longtime staples, has been bringing his 12-year-old daughter, Sophia, so she can shoot hoops on the side with Dan Feigins 12-year-old daughter, Dylan. Literally the world, like across European soccer, across everything, for people to at least stop and think. There's got to be ways to get there. Talk about that as far as the league and the individual teams. As commissioner of one of New York Citys longstanding pickup basketball games, Dan Feigin always knew where he would be every Saturday morning: inside the subterranean gymnasium at Trevor Day School in Manhattan, where he has worked for nearly three decades as a teacher, coach and administrator. How are we going to attack this?". Peter: Married. And to think it all started at a private school in New York City. John: Like you said, the smartest people could take the most complex issues and just make them simple. Just go beyond the scoreboard and championships that you guys get to make in your community, that you are proud of, Peter. Where were you on sports? But now, going into the future, obviously in the present now, we got fans at the games now, which I know is massive for the organization. We had weekly calls. We want to win. And I think my job is kind of the overall business and operations to go is a rapport with them that again, in the best case I always think an NBA player, this is a human business. Donations to the school can be turned into compensation. Like its going to streaming, its going to over the top, that is a huge change from all these local teams depending and getting guaranteed large dollar values for regional sports deals. We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. "He plays with the Bucks 95 percent of the time. Im probably like someone who gives everything away. He and his wife, Natalia, have two children, Alexandra and Thomas. The people part is always tough. There's no right equation. 2023 ERI. Because there's a lot of founders and entrepreneurs that listen to this as well and managing that dynamic with their family. I never wanted to be that guy with the goggles and the knee brace and the tucked-in shirt being like, Hey! Peter Feigin: And for a year of that, I kind of dropped everything and just kind of toured the country with an organized schedule, kind of understood the revenue part of it, kind of do. We've developed about 75% of it and people are living here, working here, and playing. Today I'm talking with Peter Feigin, President of the MBA's Milwaukee Bucks and formerly Vice-President of Marketing for the New York Knicks, and Director of Marketing at Six Flags. We're going to build it locally, regionally, nationally and then internationally. You sound super excited about the future. We call it volundeering. And that is one of the best ways to summarize Peter's spirit. We got here and kind of the first job was to look for a site and the second job was to really get public backing to build an arena, to demolish the Bradley Center and build a new arena, which were monumental big things to happen. If Im 25 and struggling to get up and down the court because I was out with my friends, and these guys who are running companies are showing up and playing ball, then I have no excuse. Crazy story of how things happened. Mike, you get it because you lived it. We hired an unbelievable CFO. "I got to tell you the enthusiasm Peter has brought to the city has been brought right back. I guarantee youll find motivation and guidance from this remarkable man. Michael Red: I don't think there's anybody better. John: Oh, my Gosh. I mean, now that I worked for three owners that are kind of in finance and private equity and guys who take real big bets and everything, I don't know if I was so much of a risk taker as I was kind of attention deficit and impulsive. And I think the only thing anybody can control is their own effort and kind of their own dreams and where they want to go. Peter: administration, in aviation, in a $3 billion international aviation company, which was just amazing. Everybody knows you are going to work your butt off if you work here. It would be great if you represented me and kind of went down there and looked at the business for a second." Obviously, your assistant help set this up. And if nothing else, like we kind of, I always answer everything pretty simply. Feigin says Bucks Gaming will consist of roughly 10 full-time employees, including the team's five players, who will be housed by the franchise. Do we want this guy to keep playing? That school happens to be the place where all of Mark Lazari and Wes Edenss kids went, who are the owners of the Bucks. Peter Feigin, the president of the Milwaukee Bucks, playing defense. Alex Woodhouse "I thought I'd hit the jackpot," Feigin said. I mean, the fact that players had just had it is no surprise. We got to like we want to use our platform to affect change and change the world. And this is how cities evolve. They have been through a system, if nothing else, highly competitive basketball for the last 12, 14 years, including kind of being shelled up in college, and what the pros are. Peter Feigin: Michael, like I said, anytime, anywhere. When Lee was shooting his film The Best Man, he brought the actors Taye Diggs and Morris Chestnut to the gym. Hes the president of the Milwaukee Bucks and hes a native New Yorker. Talk about that relationship that you have with the players. Michael Red: I just, I got to start the podcast off with, before we get into our history, someone just texted me and wanted me to ask you this question. The world is incredible. Hows Warren Buffett in person as, how exactly? So, of course, he's just had enough. He thinks hes going to sell the team. Low and behold 24 hours, called him back and I said, oh, hes going to sell the team. Just shut up for 15 seconds. Peter Feigin: So, that was and sort of weird comfort in that everybody in the world was going through it. You talk about advantages, just the osmosis at our dinner table was I knew in two seconds like I wanted to be in business. The most recent All-Star Game voting returns showed Antetokounmpo at 1.48 million votes, trailing only James. Why wouldn't you embrace Michael Red to really be a reflection of our franchise in such a great way because it's kind of what the great teams and brands do around the world is we've got this unbelievable legacy, which, you're a part of. His brother and Lee were just as excited. Here in a million person city and your ability to affect change, your platform, your ability to really make a difference is so incredible. He ends up being a generational player like you couldnt, if you were writing a Disney movie, which they have now written and now produced, it would be the fodder for a Disney. When Carter Pewterschmidt stops by in "Fresh Heir" to announce that he has made Chris Griffin the sole heir to the Pewterschmidt fortune, the family hears a crash. Team president Peter Feigin and his wife each contributed $2,900, while Feigin's brother Daniel contributed $600. Id like to do that ring ceremony for hourly staff every day and the world would be a good place. He continues to build civic and business relationships around town through face-to-face interaction. But online gambling, in state by state is massive and how you can center that do you want to become part of a casino? Are they all going to be important or do you see one heavier leaning heavier than other, in terms of future revenue opportunities that are credible and consistent? After college, Dan Feigin got a job at Trevor teaching English and coaching sports, which meant one important thing: He had access to a gymnasium in New York City, where indoor hoops are more precious than parking spaces. Peter Feigin: So, we saw this as the opportunity of, "Oh my goodness. Kevin Draughon, a former student at Trevor Day School, drove on Dan Feigin, who runs the pickup games on Saturdays at the schools gym. This kind of like, "Why are we looking at other people's metrics? I think we had like, "Oh, we had decent amount of African Americans. You're certainly allowed to have fun, because we have fun. But was like loved and I think Im addicted. It was important for us for our players, for our organization, for the city to stand up. How do we think about marketing around the world? He trusts you to run a business and he also ethically says Dont do anything you wouldnt want on the front page of a newspaper the next day, and he means it. He's the president of the Milwaukee Bucks and he's a native New Yorker. John: Hundreds. That's kind of a surreal experience in NBA arenas.". And nobody's going to question how great Milwaukee is." A, if you werent doing this and I know this is a dream job. And it was a fantasy. Are you allowed to talk about that, Peter? How could we not be good at quick serve restaurants? Peter is a serious businessman and a hilarious friend. My fantasy, I had two fantasies growing up. I mean, if I didn't have real responsibilities of a family and a wife, who actually says we need to live somewhere and stuff, I could get paid in gear. But it was one of these kind of diversion life lessons that you don't know where life takes you and just take total opportunity for it. Yes, we are shiny toy people want to see how you build a project in time and under budget and how youd manage a project. But no matter how skilled the player, new members are included on a probationary basis. And that's what we try to do. We were sitting brainstorming like, how do we keep people employed? You and I go back since you came back to the Bucks or since you came to the Bucks and you guys have been incredible to me over the years since you've been in a position in Milwaukee and really grateful of our friendship over the years and how the organization has welcomed me back to the organization. Peter: We knew each other. When you show up for the first day, are you pinching yourself? And how did that all come about? Its kind of like the unwritten rule: Dont argue about anything. and other sports leagues begin to outline their plans for comebacks in the age of social distancing, weekend warriors like Feigin are coping with basketball-shaped voids in their lives. Jesse the Jet, no question. We had to certainly do it on the resources, our facilities, we had to do it on the human capital, and then we had to change our whole perception which came from the owners on what we wanted to do on the court, which win an NBA championship and what we wanted to do off the court is be the innovators and be the leaders in the way we really operate. The ability to go into an NBA franchise and really pick all the great practices which is going around in the league is a huge advantage. Before life as we knew it went on hiatus in March, Peter Feigin was occasionally returning to New York from Milwaukee for weekend visits and to rejoin The Run, which has become multigenerational. Peter: Which people gave. What a great thing. Michael Red: It's been wonderful to watch. That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God. Jan 16th, 2016 by Mayor Tom Barrett. You are in a community thats not only sports crazy, but very community minded, the Packers, the Badgers, the Bucks are all very community involved. It just kind of really trying. John: I dont want to skip over that. With a B? Woodhouse recalled asking him. He loved you guys and what the conversation is.". It was just such a big deal. He notes that with the Bucks also opening a G League team calledthe Wisconsin Herdthis past fall, there was internal debate about making the investment, but Edens was a notable force moving the decision forward. You know I got my sources. Michael Red: Well, I love you back. Those are simple, its his genius. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. Maybe I'm biased, but knowing you and seeing what you've done with the Bucks. And I think it was like a checkpoint for us certainly, but for the whole country on like, "Boy, this is one of those inflection points that we've got to make matter in a big way." As you get older, its just harder to keep up with everybody., Christopher dAmboise, a former principal dancer, Adam Keefe, a former N.B.A. There's no living room, there's no central square, there's no big public park kind of in the middle of the city. When you are visioning this out, like you just said, human capital, a new physical capital, on the court, off the court, what were you using both singularly as you, as Peter Feigin goes, but also with your partners and the private equity guys, what were you using as your role model? When he called Milwaukee "the most segregated, racist place I've ever experience in my life" in 2016, Feigin was just being a straight shooter intent on improving the neighborhood.
